Introduction

The main difference between hybrid and electric cars is their power source. Hybrid vehicles are powered by an electric motor and an internal combustion engine, while only an electric motor powers an electric vehicle. It is fair to say that a hybrid vehicle is partially electric. Hybrid cars can use electricity or fuel, while EVs rely only on batteries. However, they differ in driving range, maintenance cost, and ease of use. It depends on your commute.

In this article, let us learn about the key differences you should know before opting for either of them.

Environmental Impact

Hybrid vehicles have fossil fuel engines. They emit harmful gases from their tailpipes into the atmosphere. In the case of EVs, it does not emit any toxic gases into the environment. They are the cleanest & greenest way of transportation as of now. To conclude, EVs are more friendly toward the environment than hybrid vehicles. But let’s not rule out hybrid cars entirely out of the equation. Because some cars use smaller engines and rely heavily on electric power. These cars emit a meager amount of carbon emissions. Since they have smaller engines, they don’t burn a lot of fuel.

The Hybrid Flexibility

Hybrid vehicles are highly flexible. They use an electric motor to power the car for speeds up to 25 to 30 kmph, making them practical on city roads. However, on highways where more power is required, the engine takes over. The batteries in these vehicles are recharged with each braking, a process called regenerative braking. These vehicles do not have an external charger for recharging.

Usage

Hybrid cars will make no sense if you are planning to buy a car that is going to be primarily driven on the highway. Most of the time, the engine power is going to kick in. This makes the battery power almost useless. You will use electric power on city roads most of the time, making it economical.

A fully electric car can be driven both in the city and on highways. They run on batteries, so you'll need to find charging stations often. If you are on a long road trip, this may become irritating. Because every full charge takes about 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on the make and model of the car.

Plug-in Hybrid Vehicles (PHEVs)

PHEVs are a type of hybrid vehicle. You can use an external charger to recharge their battery. The batteries in PHEVs are more significant than conventional hybrid cars. This gives them more range and allows the driver to operate the vehicle faster. It is essential to know that these PHEVs are expensive to maintain as you have to charge them and fill up fuel.

The Cost Factor

EVs may cost more than hybrids when purchased. But they are easier to maintain since they have fewer moving parts. Whereas hybrids are pocket-friendly while buying and but may incur higher maintenance costs. At some point, you will need to change the battery. The car's engine will also need maintenance. Hence, the ownership cost is on the higher side on hybrids.

Cheaper To Drive

Both hybrids and EVs are cheaper to drive than gas vehicles. EVs are more pocket-friendly than hybrid cars when going against each other. Because EVs use just electricity and not fuel. Comparatively, electricity is cheaper than fuel. In the case of hybrid vehicles, you’ll have to fill up fuel. If it is a plug-in hybrid, you will also have to recharge their batteries. Hence, the cost you spend here is more.

Literally On The Heavier Side

Since hybrid cars have both batteries and engines, they are generally heavier. You may not feel it while driving them, but it is what it is. These heavier cars demand top-of-the-line tyres to run them. Also, the wear and tear on these tyres will be much quicker. It should be noted that these tyres usually come with a hefty price tag. If you are a sporty rider, you will hate the extra weight of the car. It might not feel great on the corners. But it will be a sound cruiser on the highways.

Subsidies

The Indian government gives subsidies to electric vehicles via the FAME scheme. With the government's focus on green energy, it's up to citizens to use the offered resources. These subsidies can save you thousands of rupees on an electric car or motorcycle. These subsidies are provided by the government to encourage its citizens to contribute to a greener environment.

To Wrap It Up

If you are in a dilemma whether to buy an EV or a hybrid, just think about your usage. Electric vehicles can save you a lot of money if you mainly drive on the highway and can charge. If your place does not have an excellent charging infrastructure, it is better to go with a hybrid vehicle. It all depends on your usage and needs.
